ADDRESSING YOUR CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES
YOUR PAST HAS THE ABILITY TO BECOME EITHER YOUR GREATEST ASSET, OR YOUR GREATEST LIABILITY.
This week I had the honour of having an exclusive feature on the “Your Next Season Podcast” with Caitlin Effend. In this episode we talked about how addressing the experiences from your childhood is what ultimately empowers your most long-lasting personal growth and development.
Ultimately, our mind and bodies job is to protect us. And when something seems threatening to our nature, our fight or flight kicks in and our physiological coping mechanism is unknowingly to forget these experiences, either partially, or all together, to protect us.
If your mind and body believe that something is too difficult or traumatic for you to address from your past, then these experiences will unknowingly be pushed into your unconscious mind; meaning you won’t be able to remember certain experiences of your past, unless you were to take an active approach in self-reflection to try and bring these experiences to the surface.
Now this isn’t to say that every experience you can’t remember from your past are experiences that were traumatic for you and had to be pushed into your unconscious mind, but this is the main reason why so many people believe that they’ve overcome the experiences from their past… because they’ve been unknowingly suppressed.
SUPPRESSING IS NOT THE SAME AS ADDRESSING.
Many people believe that suppressing their experiences are what allow them to heal from their pasts, but it’s actually the opposite way around. When you suppress the negative experiences of your past, and you fail to address them, then they will continue to manifest into your presence and future, until you’ve been able to acknowledge, address and overcome your past experiences.
But when you’ve taken the time to reflect on your past, do the inner work to heal from it, and actively choose to overcome it, you’re taking the power back into your own hands, and disempowering your past from hindering your future.
Are you letting your past define your future?
